Approximately 40% of our patients are Hispanic and speak little or no English. Although we encourage our non-English speaking patients to bring a friend or family member to interpret for them, we still have a great need for volunteer interpreters. Our ultimate goal is to have Spanish / English interpreters scheduled for every clinic session.
There are many opportunities for interpreters to help at Bethesda and many different tasks that require bilingual volunteers .The clinic provides all training necessary for bilingual volunteers to perform the wide variety of tasks which we need language assistance with. Interpreters assist Spanish-speaking patients in all aspects of medical services, including helping physicians and nurses with translating in the examination room.
Other duties may include:
- Handling phone calls from Spanish speaking patients
- Interacting with office and medical staff
- Screening Spanish speaking individuals who want to become patients
- Checking-in our Spanish speaking patients
- Scheduling appointments for our Spanish speaking patients
If you are interested in becoming a Bethesda interpreter, simply complete and return a volunteer application. Our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to arrange for an interview and a tour of the facility. You will be advised when the next training session for volunteers will be held. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
